Updates on my Game Plot idea
Holy shit, it's been 5 whole months since I've written on this blog! I've learned a thing or two about writing, so hopefully my posts are actually bearable to read now.
I've also learned a thing or two about storytelling. It's all thanks to my World Literature class I'm taking, as well as the heaps of fan-fiction I've been reading.
Since the start of the class, we've been studying literature about the European's colonization and imperialism of Africa. Most notably, we read Things Fall Apart, about an African man who experiences troubles with imperialism and his own tribe (it's a good book, go read it). It put a lot of insight into writing foreign societies and it reminded me of how I said the protagonist of my own story lived in a tribe. I wanna rewrite it a little, with more knowledge of how these types of people actually work.
Protagonist (I'll call him Anon) lives in a village isolated from society. The society believes in many gods of the sun, water, and other natural elements. There are also gods of life and death. The head chief and his family are considered holy figures in the village, but what they don't know is that the holy family takes advantage of their status.
The holy family uses their power for bad purposes, actions that would be considered evil under the very gods they represent and preach. They bribe lawyers to provide false verdicts, pressure farmers to give them free food, and even cause crime in the village due to boredom. They do all of this to present themselves as blessed and godly so they can gain power. Anyone who doubts them is sentenced to several years in prison, and people who try to expose them are killed for "being an enemy to the gods." The sacrifice that happens every 10 years is an excuse for the chief to kill off people who know, or are close to knowing, the truth.
Anon has been here since birth, but was orphaned at a young age for reasons he doesn't know. He had many friends in school, but they were all imprisoned for showing doubt to their leaders. Anon doesn't know this, but they are all dead by the beginning of the game. Soon, he grows suspicious of the chief but keeps silent about it. However, this doubt has led him to lose faith in the gods. Everyday religious gatherings become a chore for Anon, and he begins to think he has no place in a world where everyone else thinks differently and "correct."
At some point, soon before the sacrifice, Anon stumbles across a member of the holy family ransacking someone's house, or doing some other sort of crime. He approaches them, asking if the victim had done something unholy to cover up any of his suspicions. While the family member answers yes, they see through Anon's mask and remembers it. Another idea could be him walking in on two holy family members talking about their next crime. Unknown to Anon, he is detected. Either way, it's no surprise that Anon is chosen to be sacrificed soon after.
Anon does not care at all. His feeling of worthlessness has grown so much that he had made attempts on himself before, but failed due to fear of being caught. He sees this as an opportunity to do something useful before he leaves this horrible world. So, he is set out of the village for the first time in a long time. The game begins.
Another thing about the village itself, they have slowly been adapting modern technology. Only the rich can actually afford it, but everyone at least knows what a car or gun is. Computers were banned for being "witchcraft" but everyone thinks it's really because internet information could take power away from the family. Anon never had any interest in this technology, since none of it really benefited him.
I think that's all I have in mind. I should be doing schoolwork right now, so maybe I should get to that. Next time, I might delve into Anon's first impressions of the city.
Take care!
